Monk’s wordless music combines the technical virtuosity of classical music, the poignancy and directness of folk music, the freedom and flexibility of jazz and the excitement of rock and roll. The rotating repertoire for her solo concerts is selected from Music for Voice and Piano (1972-1993), including Gotham Lullaby, Travelling, Madwoman's Vision, Choosing Companions, The Tale, New York Requiem, Songs from the Hill, and more recent compositions. |

In this fully staged production, the phenomenal Meredith Monk and her dynamic Vocal Ensemble combine music, dance and video to reflect the delicacy and power of the human spirit. Voice, piano, clarinet, bicycle wheel and other inventive instrumentation accompany an array of scenes – a montage of video portraits; performers balanced on chairs that seemingly float in space; a celebration dance; ten hands playing one piano; and songs of beginnings and endings. impermanence creates a collage of emotion, image, and sound that gently transports the audience through a haunting, mysterious, and essentially human experience. |

This program for local choruses provides a rare opportunity to perform with Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble in a joint concert setting. The repertoire includes Monk’s larger choral works from Book of Days and ATLAS: an opera in three parts. A company member travels in advance of the concert to work directly with the participants. Selections from ATLAS and Book of Days provide an invaluable learning experience, combining solo, group and choral music.Pictured here: Montclair State University Singers, Heather Buchanan, Choral Director |
